With the rising number of animals that come into our shelter each day, the Foster Care Program is a crucial element in our mission to Give Love, Teach Love, and Adopt Love. Our foster parents play a vital role in ensuring that the helpless and homeless animals brought to our shelter will find their forever home.
The purpose of the LHS Foster Care Program is to provide temporary care for animals that are not yet adoptable due to age, health, or socialization level. Normally, we need homes for 2 - 8 weeks to place little pups and kittens that come into our shelter and need a little extra time before they are ready for adoption. Most often the animals are simply too young - these animals are taken care of by their foster parents until they are old enough and strong enough to be adopted by a loving family.
We will save thousands of lives through foster care this year alone....but only with your help!
Requirements:
Foster care parents must:
- be 18 years of age
- attend a Foster Care orientation class (by registration only). To register, please contact Whitney Wilgus at wwilgus@lexingtonhumanesociety org or call 233-0044 x 254.
- complete a Foster Care application (given during the orientation class)
Foster Care Duties:
Foster care parents provide safe shelter, fresh water, plenty of food (often at their own cost), and socialization (TLC!) to their furry foster family. All medical supplies, and if needed, formula for infant animals, are provided by LHS and specific instructions and care are thoroughly explained to the foster parent prior to taking an animal home.
You can foster as often or as little as you like!
Once you are part of our foster care network, you will be notified when new animals are in need of temporary homes. before you decide to take an animal home, you will receive all the details concerning the animal's situation, anticipated length of care, and any medications or special care required. Length of care varies with each situation, but may last anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months.
Expenses:
Foster parents are asked to provide food or kitty litter (if needed)for their foster care animals. LHS will supply a carrier for the ride home and can arrange for a larger crate for housing if needed. LHS will also supply any medicine that the animal may need. You may also be asked to transport the animals to and from the shelter when vaccinations are needed.
Family Pets:
As long as your animals are up-to-date on their vaccinations and you can keep foster animals isolated from them, you should not have a problem.
Foster animals are the property of LHS and must be returned to the shelter when they reach the right age and/or health status for adoption - or when the foster parent can no longer care for them.
